Shopee Champs: Meet Phong from the Data Infrastructure Team

For Phong, who leads a team of product managers in our Data Infrastructure Team, it’s all about how he can empower different teams with solutions to utilise our data effectively.

What do you do at Shopee?
I lead a team of Product Managers focused on developing Shopee’s internal Big Data Platform, empowering teams from data analysts to algorithm engineers with the solutions to make smarter and faster data-backed decisions.
I was one of the team’s founding members and helped build several core products from scratch — something I’m extremely proud of. Through the projects I manage, I ensure our internal teams have the best tools to unlock the full potential of our data.
With big dreams to enhance data reliability and productivity within Shopee, Phong doesn’t stop at his own projects, but goes beyond to teach others how to overcome challenges with data.
With a rapidly growing userbase at Shopee, it is crucial for us to be agile to stay efficient and at the top of our game. This means being open to new methodologies and always approaching situations with a learning attitude.
I personally believe that knowledge-sharing is a powerful way to drive collective growth and learn from how others overcome their challenges. That’s why, when the Learning team reached out to ask if I’d be keen to take on a trainer role, my first thought was – “Why not?”
As of today, I’ve conducted many training sessions teaching others how to utilise the Data Platform to effectively meet their needs, and also delivered soft skills training on how to work efficiently. Seeing how these sessions helped spark practical ideas and meaningful conversations has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career.
Which Shopee Value do you most resonate with?
For me, it’s ‘We Adapt’. I believe that adapting isn’t just about reacting to change — it’s about embracing it proactively while staying focused on your team’s core mission. The data landscape is constantly evolving, with new technologies emerging rapidly.
Being ready to adapt ensures that we can drive long-term impact in today’s ever-changing tech environment.
What is one piece of advice you’d like to give to others?
Instead of resisting change, see it as an opportunity to grow, innovate, solve real problems, and make a bigger impact.
